After a meeting, the Bullfighting Committee (Mesa del Toro) and Spanish
public television (RTVE) shall sign an agreement for the promotion of
bullfighting
17/03/2010
Representatives of the Board of the Mesa del Toro held a meeting with the
Director of the Cabinet of the Presidency of the Spanisn Radio Television
(public) Corporation, Silvia García Malsipica. On the table, the demands of
the bullfighting lobby: more informative and spread attention to their
business and their complaints about lack of coverage and the broadcast of
cartoon films allegedly anti-bullfighting.
In a press release, the Mesa del Toro praise the "offer by RTVE of an
agreemnet to be drafted, stating specific aspects through which make
effective the attention of public television to the [so-called]
'Fiesta'[with ridiculous capital C] and propose a new meeting to further
advance the process."
The representatives of RTVE explained the legal circumstances that condition
their programmes, AGREED ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF BULLFIGHTS AS AN ACTIVITY
OF WIDE SOCIAL REPERCUSSION [they can say that again... about antibullfight
activism] and showed full disposition to cooperate, and to produce
programmes that take into consideration economic, cultural, traditional,
touristic and environmental aspects of bullfighting, including broadcasting
"extraordinary spectacles".
Among the reasons given by MDT were:
- Bullfighting is legal and contributes with 240 million euros VAT to Public
Treasury and therefore to public television. [and sucks many times more in
public funding-they just want more!]
- Showing bullfights, present in 5000 municipalities in Spain, is included
in rtve public service mission.
And so on and so forth....

Translation of sample letter:
I have just learned that RTVE will promote bullfights in your country. I
find it scandalous that these get subsidized and that the business of
torturing animals to death gets promoted when the great majority of
Spaniards reject this disgusting and anachronic atrocity.
Your country is going through a very serious economic downturn and it would better for you to put the money that you seem to have to throw around into
activities to help those that really need it. I am letting you know that no-one in my family will visit Spain until RTVE and the government stop promoting and subsidizing bullfighting and I will
advise my friends and contacts to choose another destination for their
holidays. |
